Description A slow-growing small tree with dense branching to 6-12m in height with an oval to rounded form. The trunk is corky while branches tend to be smooth. Leaves are dark green and flowers are yellow-green and grow in clusters. The foliage turns a bright red and orange foliage in autumn. The flying fruits or Samaras also turn bright red. Produces samara fruit that can take on a reddish tinge. Can be mistaken for Acer campestre.

Uses This tree is well-suited for streets, small gardens and urban landscapes. It responds well to pruning - even quite hard pruning - and can be easily hedged to form a screen. Its natural habitat is the Mediterranean where it grows as a large shrub to a small tree.    
Position & Soil Montpelier Maple adapts to most soil types but is intolerant of saline and sodic soils. Grows in full sun to part shade.
