Carpinus betulus fastigiata

Foliage Deciduous
Form Fastigiate
Mature Size 12 × 4m
Family Betulaceae
Upright Hornbeam

A popular ornamental tree that has a fastigiate growth habit and green leaves that turn shades of yellow and gold in autumn. The leaves have serrated margins and are strongly veined.

Its tight, upright form makes it suitable for avenue planting, hedging and a good tree specimen in smaller gardens. This variety can be hedged or clipped to provide a screening alternative. Carpinus often has its canopy raised to leave a clear trunk at the base.

While this tree is suitable for slightly-shaded area, they are very hardy, preferring a well-drained, moist site with full sun. Tolerant of a wide range of soils.
