The great thing about the recent Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is its ability to inspire creative thought among the landscape trade and maybe reveal new uses for existing forms of green life including trees.

Looking for a fresh take on current trends? It is often easier to follow the current trend than create a new one but maybe this collection of underutilized trees may encourage you to try something different in your next design or installation.

This tree has an attractive red stringy bark that exposes the cream-coloured bark underneath. It has white flowers tinged with pink during Autumn and Winter but can flower longer. The flowers look like bunches of little bells. The fruits appear green and then ripen to a bright red and are edible. The dark green leaves have a decorative serrated edge making this an all round beautiful tree. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
Azara microphylla is a small evergreen tree from South America with small deep green foliage that grows in a pinnate like form on slightly pendulous branches. Small yellow flowers are borne in spring and bring with it a nice vanilla scent. 30cm/14L
This is a small deciduous tree with ascending branches when young, maturing to a more rounded canopy. Leaves are small, triangular and tri lobed. New spring foliage is a rich bronzy-red colour maturing to a dark green in summer. In autumn foliage turns yellow to orange to red. Bark is a pale grey-brown orange and appears scaly or flaky. Flowers are green and inconspicuous. 40cm/27L
A small to medium sized maple that has a great symmetrical shape and an upright growth habit. New leaves have a green to reddish tone autumn leaves are attractive bright red, orange and yellow tones. Bark is a greyish brown with green fresh branches. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 200L
This is a small evergreen fruiting tree to approximately 3m tall. It produces green-skinned fruit with a sweet, aromatic flavour, which taste like pineapple, apple and mint. As a tree, it has attractive leathery green leaves with silvery undersides and pinky-white flowers with large red stamens. Good as a contrast tree in the garden. 30cm/14L 40cm/27L
