Glossy Green foliage selections

For the designer, foliage colour is just as an important consideration as the form of the tree and its function in the landscape. Glossy greens are important for texture variations, appearing a little more sophisticated due to their shine.

Think about all the variations of green in nature and the emotions that colour evokes. Almost always it is considered calming and tranquil, natural, safe and harmonious.  Green is the most balanced of colours making it a stable influence on us. Seldom would we feel anything other than relaxed and refreshed in a green environment regardless of its shade.

But there are many shades of green and these can vary in intensity. For the designer, foliage colour is just as an important consideration as the form of the tree and its function in the landscape.

Glossy Green

We have allocated glossy green a category all of its own as matching texture and finish can often be part of the design focus.

This is an evergreen, upright growing magnolia reaching 4m. Being naturally dense in habit, with a tight, compact form, it is ideal used as an informal hedge. Leaves are large and rounded - glossy and dark green on top with felted, bronze undersides. Gloriously large white flowers appear during the warmer months from late spring through to autumn. 30cm/14L 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 200L
An Australian native, this is an improved variety of the regular Tristaniopsis laurina. Leaves are dark green, shiny and large - and as the name suggests, luscious in appearance! New growth starts out a distinctive copper colour and further interest appears over time with the branches developing deep purple coloured bark which peels back to reveal a smooth, cream trunk. Flowers are yellow and sweetly perfumed, appearing in clusters through summer. 50cm/52L 100L
This could be a tall spreading shade tree, but mostly we see this tree ordered for its thick foliage and suitability for instant hedging and screens. 'Flash' has super attractive foliage that consists of different shades of green. They are great for clipping into a tight formal hedge, as a topiary specimen or a screen to 10m if left untrimmed. Just prune to keep shape! They also cope well in many growing situations and soils, in full sun or part shade. 20cm/4.5L 30cm/14L 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 150L
This is a stout shrub-like tree best known for its beautiful fragrant white flowers borne in clusters in Spring and Summer. Following the flowers, a highly ornamental display of red berries appears which turn to black as they ripen. It has glossy bright green foliage which is large, leathery and oval in shape. A fast-growing species, suitable for hedging that can quickly form a dense screen, rounded shrub or small tree. 30cm/14L
This is a lovely tree to 10m tall which makes it ideal as a feature in a residential setting. It has beautiful glossy dark green leaves with velvety brown undersides and white fragrant flowers up to 30cm in diameter. We see this as an alternative to 'Exmouth' with a similar upright branching structure but with glossier green leaves. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
