Acer rubrum 'Autumn Red'Canadian MapleThis is a very common deciduous tree in North America. It is a beautiful rounded tree with ascending branches when young, maturing to a more rounded canopy. Great for autumn colour. Leaves stay green longer than other varieties before turning bright orange to deep red. All parts of the tree, for example flowers, twigs and seeds, are red in varying shades. This tree is also known as 'October Glory' or 'April Splendour'. |
Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy'Burgundy RedbudThis small, attractive tree has spectacular heart-shaped, burgundy coloured leaves that continually change colour throughout the year. A rich purple in spring, the foliage transforms to green over summer, followed by a multi-coloured autumn display in tones of red, apricot and gold. The branches have a distinctive, smooth, dark brown wood which contrasts well with the blossom like pink flowers that are borne before the re-emergence of leaves in spring. |
Catalpa bignonioidesIndian Bean TreeThis is a large attractive tree with a broad dome-shaped canopy and large long-stalked leaves. In summer it carries bell-shaped flowers in white, various pink shades, and soft apricot-orange, followed by clusters of long, pendulous, bean-like seed capsules, hence its common name. |
Fraxinus pennsylvanica 'Urbdell'Urbanite AshThis tree is attractive and tough. It has a pyramid shape with a strong, upright trunk and develops grey brown bark which becomes deeply furrowed as it matures. Yellowish-green flowers are produced in spring and in autumn, dark green, glossy foliage turns a beautiful bronze colour before falling. Suitable to a wide variety of both residential and commercial projects, it has a moderate growth rate and adapts to most soils and conditions. |
Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis 'Sunburst'Golden Honey LocustA beautiful, deciduous tree with a broad, open, spreading canopy and soft, weeping, hanging, pendulous branches. Young foliage, bipinnate leaves, start off a bright yellow colour and ripens to lime green. In winter, large black seed pods hang from the branches. It is a popular tree due to its vibrant colour and overall graceful appearance. This is a thornless variety of Gleditsia. |
Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei 'Tuscarora'Crepe Myrtle (hot pink)This deciduous tree has small oval shaped green leaves which turn a stunning reddish/orange in autumn. The most striking part of the tree is the beautiful display of vibrant, hot pink, crinkled flowers which appear in late summer. Flowers form on new growth, and so are encouraged by winter pruning. Bark peels off to reveal a smooth trunk which is beige in colour with red-brown streaks. |
Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris'Kay Parris Magnolia (evergreen)A beautiful dense tree with small mid-green glossy leaves and brown velvety underside. It produces creamy white fragrant flowers anytime during the warmer months from November through March. The tree grows denser and flowers are bigger than 'Little Gem', making this a popular alternative. It differentiates itself from other varieties by its wavy edge to its leaf and its bright pink new growth. |
Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia'Golden RobiniaThis attractive deciduous tree provides soft filtered shade with its open habit and pinnate leaf shape. It is a moderate grower with striking lime green foliage which intensifies into a vibrant, golden colour in autumn. Long white, pea-like flowers are fragrant and appear in early summer, followed by smooth brown seed pods. Suitable for hot dry climates and coastal conditions, however it does need shelter from strong winds as the branches may tend towards being brittle. |
Magnolia grandiflora 'Coolwyn Gloss' ™Coolwyn's Magnolia (evergreen)This is a lovely tree to 10m tall which makes it ideal as a feature in a residential setting. It has beautiful glossy dark green leaves with velvety brown undersides and white fragrant flowers up to 30cm in diameter. We see this as an alternative to 'Exmouth' with a similar upright branching structure but with glossier green leaves. |
Ulmus parvifolia 'Burnley Select'Burnley Select Chinese ElmBurnley Select is a form of Ulmus parvifolia that was grown by seed from a mature Elm, originally located at Burnley College in Melbourne. It is an attractive small to medium-sized semi-deciduous, ornamental tree with glossy dark green leaves which turn shades of yellow and red in autumn before falling. Its form is wider than other Chinese Elms at an early stage. The bark exfoliates in patches, revealing beautiful mottled colours of grey, green, orange & brown. |
Pyrus ussuriensisManchurian Ornamental PearThis Manchurian Pear is a very popular selection largely due to the brilliant display of colour in Autumn. The dark green foliage is oval in shape with serrated edges and the onset of Autumn sees this leaves turning to a rich, dark red. Wider spreading than the 'Capital' or 'Cleveland Select', this form has a dense, rounded habit maturing to be a broad, medium-sized tree. Very early flowering, dark brown buds begin to open revealing a light pink colour before bursting into a beautiful spring show of white flowers. Small fruits follow the flowers, and although they are generally unpalatable to humans, birds and other wildlife have been known to feed off them. |
Calodendrum capenseCape ChestnutSmall to medium evergreen tree with beautiful flowers borne from November to December. The smooth grey bark can also be a feature. Despite its common name, Cape chestnut is not closely related to either chestnuts (Castanea) or horse chestnuts (Aesculus), but is a member of the citrus family. It is not a typical citrus in appearance either, as it is a large tree with spectacular flowers and the fruit does not look like lemons, oranges or limes. But it does look spectacular when flowers cover the crown. While the image here shows a pink flowering Cape Chestnut tree, flowers will either be pink or white. |
