At this time of year our thoughts turn to coping with summer heat. It is much the same with trees. They can tend to react to variations in temperature like we do.
Here are some simple steps to reducing heat stress on trees;
1. Right plant, right place – Let us assist you with selecting the best tree for aspect and position. We suggest that you work with what you have rather than what you want. This way your tree will thrive in its conditions. Chances are if you talk to a growing specialist like ourselves, you will be able to marry both what you like with the best choice for the position.
2. It’s all about the soil – We recommend that you prepare the soil well so the trees you are planting have the BEST chance to thrive for the long term. Complete Tree Starter can be added at the time of planting to assist with the stress of a new environment. Good quality, cool soil over summer will give your plants to best chance of survival.
3. Mulch is a must- For both new and existing trees, we suggest you maintain a minimum 50mm layer of good quality, organic mulch that will break down and add to your soil. It will also work to suppress weeds.
4. Long and slow - The best way to water trees is slowly for a long time, so the roots have time to absorb the moisture from the soil as it soaks down. The roots that absorb the water aren’t deep. They spread out sideways and most are just a foot or so beneath the surface of the soil. Newly planted trees and young trees haven’t yet grown a large network of roots. That’s why they can’t store much water and need to be watered often. They should be watered near the trunk, where the root ball is.
5. Use your finger to test for moisture – If it's wet, don’t water; if its dry get on to it! Using your finger is a simple but effective measure for checking moisture!
6. Reduce your own heat stress - Plant a tree! Trees provide shade for houses decreasing inside temperatures which in turn brings down power bills and water for use in air conditioning. Developed urban areas around cities are warmer than rural areas due to the amount of paving, roofing, roads and brick used we have in these areas. Planting more trees into urban areas will work to cool down the environment.
